Meet the Owner of Buford Kids’ SPOT
Deb Hughes, MBA, SLPA
Deb Hughes brings a unique combination of professional experience, education, and personal understanding to Buford Kids’ SPOT.
As a U.S. Army veteran, Deb began her career in satellite communications before spending 20 years as an engineer. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology (BSEET) from DeVry Institute and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Keller Graduate School of Management. Later, she returned to school at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD).
That career change was inspired by Deb’s son, Daniel, who was diagnosed with the rare neurological condition Alexander disease. Her experiences as his mother gave Deb firsthand insight into the challenges families can face while navigating therapy, healthcare, education, and other support systems. Ultimately, Daniel inspired the path that led Deb to open Buford Kids’ SPOT in 2020.
Deb’s Mission
Today, Deb’s commitment to families extends beyond the clinic. She helps parents navigate Katie Beckett and other waivers, advocates alongside families during the IEP process, and serves as a parent advocate within the Alexander disease community. She is also the founder of Daniel’s Fight, a nonprofit supporting Alexander disease research.
For Deb, Buford Kids’ SPOT is the continuation of a deeply personal mission to help children receive individualized care while making sure their families have knowledgeable, compassionate people in their corner.
